In Piazza della Scala,in front of Leonardo da Vinci’s monument by Pietro Magni (1872),we find the Scala Theatre,the most famous in Italy and one of the most important in the world.
It is also known as “the lyric temple” and it is situated in one of the most popular and elegant squares in Milan, the Scala Square from which it takes the name.
The theatre was grounded by the Emperess Maria Teresa of Austria on the 26 February 1776.
Today the theatre has a neoclassical look,with stages in ivory colour and gold decorations.
The stall insted is made of wood and the walls are covered with red damask.
His capacity is very big, the seats which the Scala Theatre can have are 2242, arranged in two galleries(520), the stall(678) and the stages(764).
There is also a Museum which collects portraits,busts and costumes of the most famous artists of the past.
Some names of weel known lyric artists that sang on the stage are:Maria Callas, Mario del Monaco, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Katia Ricciarelli and Montserrat Caballé.
