The Poldi Pezzoli Museum began as a private collection started by of Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli's mother. When Gian Giacomo became an adult and inherited the palace and the family patrimony he amplifed the collection. He bought weapons and armours, which at the time were much in demand as collection items. The various rooms were based on the Baroque and Renaissance styles. So the house became similar to an art gallery. The first room was created for the armory and it was situated on the first floor.
The works for the costructions were entrusted to Giuseppe Bertini and the painter Luigi Scrosati. Around the seventies the collection became more rigorous and a point of reference in Italy and abroad. On the death of Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli, 1879, the building and the pictures were delivered to the Brera Accademy so the house became a real art foundation. The museum was officially opened on 25 April 1881.
